I didn't mean to go to Joe's. My friend and I were running late for meeting up with friends at the Banksy Art Exhibit (called The Village Pet Store) in Greenwich village so we abandoned our plan to go to a Thai place called Pinto on Christopher Street and instead opted to grab a slice. I don't know too much about Greenwich so we decided to simply walk around until we found a pizza place, something that's really easy to do in nyc.
Low and behold, as we walked up the steps from the subway at 6th Ave and 3rd there was a pizza place lying in wait. Cafe Amore's bright sign was lit up like a beacon to our desire for pizza and it stood just mere feet from the snake pit into the subway that we had just exited. As we stood in front of this glorious site and thought about what luck it was to find a pizza joint before we even began our search, a seemingly homeless fellow (I don't really know where he lives) interrupted our mini celebration.
"You don't want to go there," he muttered to us and simultaneously to himself. "It's not good, there's much better nearby," he continued.
This was the first time I've received dinner tips from a homeless dude so I wasn't sure what to think but Cafe Amore did look kind of cheesy (not intended to be a pun) in a Sbarro kind of a way so I was willing to listen.
My new homeless friend said he knew of a better pizza place and since we like pizza and better, we followed. He took us south down 6th Ave and turned onto Carmine street and stopped in front of Joe's Pizza. I've never heard of Joe's Pizza but apparently a lot of other people have. On the door was the testimony of Ben Affleck claiming that Joe's was without a doubt the best pizza in nyc. This didn't really make me inclined to go to Joe's but since there were actually people inside the place (Cafe Amore was empty, perhaps thanks to the homeless doods good work) it seemed like a good place to try.
Slices of pepperoni were $3.25 and were really good. Ben Affleck is an idiot. It's not the best by any means but it's very good. Possibly the best slice in New York, but that's debatable. Definitely worth repeat visits.
In case you were wondering, we gave our good samaritan/homeless person some money and the cashier gave the guy some free soda (it looked like we weren't the first people he had ushered into Joe's).
